VideoKidnapper Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 25, 2026
Overview
VideoKidnapper is a browser extension that detects and facilitates downloading of publicly available videos from social media platforms. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data the extension accesses and how it is handled.
Data Collection
VideoKidnapper does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data.
The extension operates entirely within your browser. No data is sent to external servers owned or operated by us. There are no analytics, tracking pixels, or telemetry of any kind.
Data the Extension Accesses
To function, the extension requires access to web page content on supported platforms. Specifically:
- Page content on supported sites: The extension reads page content on Reddit, Twitter/X, Facebook, and Bluesky to detect video elements and extract publicly available video URLs.
- Network requests: The extension passively observes network requests on supported platforms to identify video stream URLs (such as HLS .m3u8 playlists). No requests are modified or blocked.
- Local storage: User preferences (default quality, enabled platforms, filename pattern) are stored locally in Chrome's storage API. This data never leaves your browser.
- Session storage: Detected video data for open tabs is stored temporarily in Chrome's session storage and is cleared when tabs are closed.
Third-Party Services
The extension makes requests to the following third-party APIs solely to retrieve publicly available video metadata:
- Reddit JSON API: To fetch video URLs and metadata for Reddit posts
- Bluesky Public API: To resolve user handles and fetch post data via the AT Protocol public API
- Twitter Syndication API: To retrieve video variant URLs for tweets
No authentication credentials, cookies, or personal information are sent to these APIs beyond what is necessary for a standard public web request.
Permissions Justification
- activeTab: To access the current tab's URL and detect which platform you are browsing
- storage: To save your preferences locally
- downloads: To save videos to your computer using Chrome's download manager
- webRequest: To passively observe video stream URLs on supported platforms
- Host permissions: To read page content and detect videos on Reddit, Twitter/X, Facebook, and Bluesky domains
Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer any data to third parties. The extension has no server-side component and no mechanism to transmit data externally.
Children's Privacy
The extension does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
